Salty Dog

Salty Dog grapefruit

I am a huge fan of grapefruit. When I was a kid, the best breakfast ever was half a grapefruit, segmented, and covered with white sugar. Diving into that was a real treat. Considered candy at our house really. Ever since, I just love the fruit so enjoying a salty dog is honestly no surprise to anyone in my wheelhouse.

This super easy refreshing cocktail is a basic twist on the ever popular grey hound. The twist, salt the rim. That is it. The rest is the same. Now we kick up the salt a bit with some fresh herbs from the garden. Rosemary works well for this.

If you are a fan of grapefruit like I am, this just might be your next favourite summer sipper.

Ingredients

    1. Ice
    2. 2 oz of Premium Vodka
    3. 4 oz of fresh squeezed pink grapefruit juice
    4. 1/2 oz of rosemary simple syrup (see recipe in notes)
    5. Maldon salt
    6. Fresh rosemary (1 sprig for garnish, 1 sprig to chop and combine with salt)

Instructions

  1. Combine the salt and rosemary. (2 tablespoons of salt and 1/2 tsp of rosemary)
  2. Pour the salt onto a small plate. Using a grapefruit wedge, wet the rim of the glass and dip into the salt mixture.
  3. Fill the glass with ice cubes.
  4. Add 1/2 tsp of simple syrup oven the ice.
  5. Add the vodka, then the grapefruit juice one the ice.
  6. Take the sprig of rosemary, rub it between your hands to release the oils and use this to stir your drink. Then garnish with the same sprig.
  7. Serve.

Notes

Add 1 cup of sugar, to one cup of water in a small pot. Add the rosemary. Bring the water and sugar to a boil and once sugar is totally dissolved, turn off heat and allow to cool. Store in the fridge for 1 week.
